The Washington County Board of Education has amended its general fund budget to $348 million after facing an $8.6 million funding shortfall from expected county and state sources. The initial proposal was $356.7 million. The board has made several adjustments, including cutting nearly $3.7 million from the potential raises pool, allowing for a minimum 3% pay raise for employees. Other adjustments included forgoing a $4.8 million contribution to the Other Post-Employment Benefits fund, which in previous years saw up to $6 million allocated annually.
The Board of County Commissioners will provide $110.2 million, slightly above the minimum funding requirement. Current salary resources for raises are now at $6.45 million, including funding for a 2% pay scale increase for teachers which took effect on May 24.
Additionally, the school system will not expand its virtual learning program for elementary students due to state funding cuts and will see a reduction in classroom teacher positions. However, 17 supplemental teachers will be added to assist in math and English.
Future county contributions under the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future are anticipated to increase to between $114 million and $116 million within the next year, potentially providing more robust funding for the school system.
