University of Kansas Health System acquires Liberty Hospital

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (WDAF) — The University of Kansas Health System and Liberty Hospital have officially merged after KU Health acquired the Northland hospital on Monday.

The two confirmed the merger back in May when leaders from each hospital had a meeting to discuss the potential partnership.

Leaders announced the merger had been completed on Monday, July 1.

CEO of Liberty Hospital Raghu Adiga said the hospital’s board of trustees and senior leaders evaluated more than 30 potential partners and that it was clear KU Health was the right partner.

“We believe this relationship not only strengthens Liberty Hospital but the Liberty community and the entire Northland,” Adiga said. “I’m more than convinced that this is the right decision and path forward for Liberty Hospital.”

“This is such an exciting day for us as well,” President of the Health System’s Kansas City division Tammy Peterman said. “While we weren’t proactively looking for another growth opportunity, we knew the importance of the Northland to our region and to its continued growth.

Peterman also said 35% of their patients come from Missouri. It is also KU Health’s very first hospital in Missouri.

“While we have several locations in Missouri, we knew eventually we would need a way to care for more patients in Missouri and the Northland to keep care close to home.”

KU Health said they will invest more than $300 million over the next 12 years and bring new services to Liberty.
