As the presidential election landscape shifts dramatically with President Joe Biden stepping down and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, Nina Jankowicz, Co-Founder & CEO of The American Sunlight Project, joins Catalysts to discuss the spread of disinformation during elections.
Jankowicz emphasizes that social media has created a more “polluted environment” for disinformation. She points out that information now spreads much more rapidly, with an increase in both foreign and AI-generated disinformation, describing it as “a crowded environment.” She stresses the importance of voters double-checking information shared online.
“I would say to anybody with a following of even over five to ten thousand followers on any platform, we really have a duty to verify information before we share it and not just to stir the pot for the sake of getting engagement or likes. Our democracy is on the line and for our democracy to function we need a set of shared facts and everyone has a duty to uphold those facts,” Jankowicz told Yahoo Finance.
