R&B Superstar Monica Dabbles in Country, the new ‘It’ Genre

R&B superstar Monica signs with WME in the lead-up to her new album, as well as a country release produced by Brandi Carlile.

Grammy-winning R&B singer Monica has signed with WME in all areas, according to an exclusive report from Variety. The deal precedes the release of her new R&B album, MDA, as well as a new country album, Open Roads, which is executive produced by Brandi Carlile. Both projects will be released later this year.

“I’m truly excited about this full circle moment to reconnect with WME since that’s where it all started for me with my debut album, Miss Thang,” said Monica. “My heart is filled with immense joy as I reunite with my first talent agency for the upcoming 30th anniversary of Miss Thang. I’m grateful, humbled, and immeasurably thrilled about the possibilities of this reunion! Their exceptional track record and knowledge regarding my brand, both past and present, makes them the perfect partner for myself as an artist, and MonDeenise Productions as a whole. I look forward to working closely with their incredible team and exploring new opportunities.”

Earlier this summer, Monica reunited with Brandy for a remix of Ariana Grande’s “The Boy is Mine,” the latest single from Grande’s Eternal Sunshine album. Brandy and Monica had a smash hit in 1998 with their original “The Boy is Mine,” released on Brandy’s second album, Never Say Never. Monica also recently performed as a special guest on Missy Elliott’s Atlanta stop on her Out of This World Tour, singing “So Gone.”

2019 saw Monica launching her own label, MonDeenise Music, releasing her first single under the project, “Commitment,” which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart. The singer has also spent plenty of time on the road this year in support of Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday 2 North American tour.

Monica has enjoyed six No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart, making her one of the few artists with chart-topping singles in three consecutive decades alongside powerhouses like Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, James Brown, and Marvin Gaye. “The Boy is Mine” earned Monica and Brandy 13 weeks in the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1998.
