Nicole Scherzinger is set to compete with her former ‘X Factor’ boss Simon Cowell in a Netflix talent show war as they both launch pop star search shows in the coming months
Nicole Scherzinger is gearing up for a showdown with Simon Cowell as she joins a rival Netflix talent show.
The ex-X Factor panellists, who teamed up on the UK series in 2016 and 2017 and again for X Factor: Celebrity in 2019, are set to launch competing pop star search programmes soon.
Nicole is slated to be a judge on Building The Band, helmed by none other than Backstreet Boys icon AJ McLean. The show will pit 50 contestants against each other for a spot in a brand-new band.
Meanwhile, Simon is throwing his hat into the ring with The Midas Touch, aiming to discover another sensation like One Direction.
An insider spilled the beans to The Sun on Sunday: “Nicole is a huge coup for Netflix as she has been on so many talent shows in the UK and the US in the past, so is synonymous with the genre. It shows how serious bosses at the streamer are about competing with the major channels.”
“Nicole is the whole package. With her experience in the industry, she also brings personality, warmth and glamour. She’s perfect. Casting AJ is a shrewd move as he has a massive fanbase and is really quirky on screen.”
On the flip side, Simon is eager to replicate the magic of the 2010 ‘X Factor’ auditions, which saw Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson try out as solo acts before being formed into the global phenomenon that is One Direction.
Simon Cowell has hinted at a significant change for his new boyband, revealing a regret over One Direction’s name rights. On The Diary of a CEO podcast, Simon admitted: “The one thing I regret is I should have kept the name. I should have owned the name. That’s the problem. When you give an artist the name, it’s not yours. And that’s my only regret. So if you’re listening, I’ll buy it back from you.”
He also noted the potential issues with band members not wanting to tour, saying, “If one of the band members, for whatever reason, say they don’t want to tour, it can stop the others [from] touring. So, if it was me who owned the name, it wouldn’t be a problem.”
