The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas is reportedly planning to move its political office from Qatar to Iraq, following pressure from Doha and Washington to show more flexibility in ceasefire talks in the Gaza Strip. This was reported by the Emirati newspaper “The National”, according to which, moreover, the Iraqi government approved this plan last month.
The sources cited by the Emirati newspaper revealed that the possible transfer of Hamas leaders would have been discussed in May by the head of the movement’s political office, Ismail Haniyeh, and by government officials in Iraq and Iran. An Iraqi MP told “The National” that “there is no consensus among Iraqi political groups on the arrival of Hamas in Baghdad. Some, especially Kurds and some Sunnis, fear it could exacerbate differences with the United States. But despite the lack of consensus, the government’s decision to host Hamas will not be reversed.”
