Middle East: Hamas opens a political office in Iraq

The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas has opened a political office in Iraq. An official opening ceremony was held yesterday in the presence of a delegation from the Iraqi Shiite militia Kataib al Imam Ali, led by the deputy general secretary Yaqoub al Zaidim. “The meeting saw a discussion on the Israeli aggression against Gaza, on the worsening of the situation on the ground and on the deprivation of the most basic rights” of the Palestinians, reports a note released via Telegram by the Iraqi armed group, underlining “the need to coordinate the Arab and international efforts and to act quickly to stop the aggression and open safe corridors to bring aid to the people of Gaza.”

So far, Iraqi state authorities have neither confirmed nor denied the news. Iraqi sources report to “Agenzia Nova” that the Hamas office in Iraq is located in the Al Ridwaniyah neighborhood, located in the western part of Baghdad, near the international airport. The opening of a Hamas office in the Arab country with a Shiite majority takes on particular relevance in light of the rumors according to which Qatar threatened to expel Hamas if the Palestinian movement did not accept the ceasefire agreement proposed by the United States and Israel.
