The King’s College Entrepreneurship Prize, one of the largest university entrepreneurship competitions in Europe, has awarded first prize to Flare for its branded student safety apps used by universities and colleges.

King’s College Entrepreneurship Prize Awarded to Flare for Student Safety Apps

Awarded by King’s College (Cambridge University), the prize and accompanying grant will help Flare provide branded safety apps to more universities, colleges and schools in the UK.

Flare’s white-label service enables educational institutions to create branded safety apps tailored to their specific needs, helping promote a secure and supportive environment for students. Founded by recent Cambridge graduates, Flare is dedicated to enhancing student welfare through cutting-edge technology.

Gabriel Brown, co-founder of Flare said: “With the support of the King’s Entrepreneurship Prize, we can expand our reach and offer more institutions the opportunity to provide branded safety apps for their students. Our service allows universities and colleges to prioritise student safety and promote a positive brand image by offering a customised app that meets their unique needs.”

In November 2023, Flare launched a free app for student safety: “Flare – Stay Safe”. The app was adopted by over 50 student union partners in more than 27 universities across the UK. This free app serves as an emergency alert tool for campus safety, allowing students to send pre-written alert messages to their friends and family with a single tap. The app has been particularly well-received by smaller institutions that may not have 24/7 security staff.

Flare’s white-label service builds on the success of the company’s free emergency alert app with a range of customisable features, enabling institutions to order a safety app that aligns with their brand and institutional requirements. These features include emergency messaging, location sharing, one tap SOS and a panic alarm.

Flare’s service is built on an innovative microservice architecture, enabling it to lower the financial and logistical barriers to adopting student safety apps. For example, Flare offers free trials to institutions so that they can try out their app with key stakeholders before making a purchasing decision. Additionally, delivered apps are fully maintained and tested by Flare as part of a transparent and cost-effective annual subscription.
