How the tech outage impacted Marshall Health Network

HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK) – If you woke up this morning and your favorite TV channel was dark or your phone service was fuzzy, you’re not the only one.

A faulty software update from CrowdStrike caused technological havoc across the globe. Flights were delayed, businesses couldn’t operate and clinics and hospitals also fell victim to the cyber outage.

Governments also had to put a pause on their schedules across the world because of trouble with CroudStrike’s update impacting Microsoft Windows.

Hospitals had to reschedule appointments and their records system failed. In some cases, surgeries had to be pushed back for some patients. An official with Marshal Health Network told WOWK 13 News how their facility is functioning hours after the outage.

“There are some impacts and maybe, too, scheduling procedures or scheduling office visits with patients. Those are being dealt with on a one-on-one basis. But for the most part – for patient care – it’s business as usual,” said Dennis Lee, chief information officer of Marshall Health Network.

Lee says it was a hassle to get things up and running, mostly because they had to manually reboot every system that was affected.
