Holly Marie Combs is looking back on the final months of Charmed costar Shannen Doherty’s life.
The pair were working together on the new podcast The House of Halliwell with fellow cast members Brian Krause and Drew Fuller in the weeks before Doherty’s death. During the latest episode of the podcast, Combs, 50, shared that the late actress thought she had “more time” before her death on July 13 following years of living with cancer.
“That’s one of the saddest parts to me is that she was really looking forward to this,” she said of the new podcast. “And she was actually really looking forward to watching the episodes with Rose [McGowan]. And one of the last times I was with her, we actually watched the first two episodes together like we were freaking teenagers again.”
“And, we sat in her office and watched the episodes together before we recorded this,” she shared. “I’ve had a little bit of time to reflect on that and everything worked out.”
The Pretty Little Liars alum then got emotional, saying, “I think she did as much as she could in the time that she had. But, we did think we had more time.”
“And that’s the really sad part is, you know, we had big, big plans for this year,” she shared. “And, she didn’t think she was going anywhere anytime soon. And that’s you know, it sounds terribly cliché, until it happens to you.”
Combs also reflected on how Doherty thought she had “more time” but “life changes on a dime” as she broke down in tears.
“I want everyone to know she was super happy to be here and she was really happy to watch it again with fresh eyes as she kept saying,” she shared. “And she became a fan. She watched it like an audience member.”
“I don’t think anybody loved Charmed more than she did,” she added. “And that’s a fact.”
Fuller shared that Doherty had “all these incredible plans” before her death.
“We’re talking about this and that and moving and building a new house in Tennessee and possibly going and building and living in Italy,” he said. “She acted as if, and her energy felt as if, she was gonna be here for as long as we were.”
“She was gonna outlive us all,” Combs responded. “And there are many times I firmly believed that. So when things did take a turn and it happened very quickly, it was very shocking, which sounds silly to say when someone has a terminal disease, but it’s still very shocking and it was shocking to her.”
“She just wanted to do so much more than her body was able to let her do. And I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who had such an enthusiasm for life, because lord knows I do not,” she added with a laugh. “I’m fairly jaded, and she just wanted to do more and more things and see more and more places.”
On July 20, Combs also shared a heartfelt video to Instagram that featured photos of her and Doherty over their decades-long friendship. As photos flashed across the screen in Combs’ video, Faith Hill’s song “There You’ll Be” played in the background.
“It’s been one week and it feels like forever,” Combs wrote in the caption of the post. “I spent all day looking for one particular picture and found just about every picture but that one.”

“Shannen promised to haunt me but I thought she’d be occupied with a few others at first,” she continued. “Alas I’m sure it will show up when and where I least expect it. My rock. 10:18.”
