Georgia Southern head football coach Clay Helton and company woke up in the Big Easy on Tuesday for Sun Belt Conference Media Days. This year, Helton was joined by running back Jalen White and defensive back TJ Smith. The Eagles are ready to bounce back from a disappointing 2023 campaign that saw the team go 3-5 in conference play and finish 6-7 overall while ending the year on a five-game losing streak, a low not seen since 2017. With fall camp right around the corner, the Eagles are ready for a fresh start and it will start at the quarterback position as former QB1 Davis Brin graduated this past spring. “The beauty of being able to go into a quarterback competition, which we have not been in since I’ve been at Georgia Southern, is to let everyone grow,” Helton said. “We had 15 practices in spring football. Establish who is playing best in the moment, who is establishing himself as a leader, who is making great decisions getting the ball out on time, being able to lead our football team.”The Eagles are set to enter fall camp with a total of six quarterbacks on the roster: Redshirt senior Dexter Williams II, redshirt junior Colton Fitzgerald, redshirt sophomores David Dallas and JC French, and true freshmen Trey Townsend and Tyler Budge. “Davis Dallas is healthy, JC French is healthy. We bring Dexter Williams in, Tyler Budge, who is tremendous young talent, and Colton Fitzgerald, you have depth and talent,” Helton said.Georgia Southern is set to open the season on August 31st at home against Boise State. Preparation is underway in Statesboro. When the team opens fall camp next week, it won’t be long until a QB1 is named.”We will go through those 25 practices and the guy who is producing and leading our team best will walk out there first against Boise State.”
