CHICO, Calif. – With temperatures over 100 degrees the past week we checked in with vendors at the Chico Certified Farmers Market.
Lai Saechao, the manager of Yoon Chao’s Farm, told Action News Now she has seen fewer people going to the farmers market over the past few weeks. With a drop in sales, they have also had to face other challenges. One of them is making sure their produce stays fresh.
“It definitely gets a little hot for them, the berries when it gets too hot. We try to get them out early … whatever we don’t have by like 11 we start on-selling them so that we can get them out,” Saechao said. “You start seeing that they start turning a little darker as the day goes on.”
Saechao says they have to put shade over its berries so the produce doesn’t get wilted out in the fields because of the heat. She says the shading helps keep the berries out of the sun 70% of the day.
Saechao says the farmers market is usually the busiest in the morning, as the temps start to rise, they notice a drop in attendance. Saechao says it is normal to see a dip in sales during this time of the year.
