Summer is the perfect time for catching up on reading. We have more time, and if we’re lucky, we can spend a few days under a beach umbrella, in a hammock, or on a breezy veranda. What better way to spend that time than with a good book? We’ve already discussed what to take on vacation if you’re in the mood for romantic stories, miss homework, or want to solve mysterious cases. Now, we want to list the newly released or upcoming books we’re excited to read.
Open Throat – Henry Hoke
Released in Italian on July 5 by Mercurio Books, Open Throat is an intriguing, almost experimental novel that has garnered rave reviews overseas and has finally arrived here. It is written from the perspective of a mountain lion who, hungry in a drought-stricken landscape, observes a homeless encampment and listens to climbers. It’s a reflection on what it means to be human and animal with an ecological backdrop, encouraging us to view the world as a collection of living beings.
La vita profonda – Martina Faedda
Adolescence, growth, love, contact, relationship with one’s body, family, and illness are the main themes of La vita profonda, the debut novel by the very young Martina Faedda, released on July 12 by Nottetempo. The protagonist, Olivia, is torn between the affection of two opposing parental figures: Gioele and Vittorio, united by their love for the same woman.
Intermezzo – Sally Rooney
Those who don’t enjoy summer and have decided to vacation in late September are in luck. Even more so are those who prefer to read novels in their original language. Why? Because the highly anticipated new novel by Sally Rooney, titled Intermezzo, will hit the English-speaking market on September 30 and in Italy on November 12, published by Einaudi. What’s it about? Human relationships, of course, as well as familial ties, sibling intimacy, love, and loss. We can’t wait.
The Sirens – Emilia Hart
“The Sirens is the captivating story of four women separated by time yet more connected than one might imagine. An unmissable new novel about female resilience, encompassing all the power of sisterhood and the ineffable magic of the sea,” says Fazi Editore about this eagerly awaited second novel by Anglo-Australian author Emilia Hart, published on July 9, 2024. Her debut, titled Wayward, was a success.
Tender is the Flesh – Agustina Bazterrica
We know, we know. This novel was released in April 2024 by Eris Edizioni. We’re still in spring-summer territory, and such a synopsis deserves to be included in this list. Judge for yourself. “Marcos has always worked in the meat market; it’s a family business. But now things have changed, radically and irreversibly. A virus has attacked animals, both domestic and wild, leading to their systematic culling, making their meat inedible. Now, the meat he deals with is different, special, because governments worldwide have had to address the situation by legalizing the farming, production, slaughter, and processing of human meat.”
