BARTON COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — The Barton County Health Department is searching for more ways to help its residents access mental health resources.
The county is encouraging all residents to fill out a quick survey with questions designed to help health professionals better understand who is in need and how to better address those needs.
The survey consists of 12 personal questions all related to mental health. The survey can be filled out anonymously.
Barton County Health Department Director Karen Winkelman believes that learning more about the needs of Barton County residents will go a long way.
“Just looking at the answers to those questions and looking at the age group or the occupation or looking at what their barriers are can maybe help identify some ways to remove those barriers for them,” said Winkelman.
Health professionals in the county are preparing to take action based on the results they receive. The department is already taking measures to help some residents in need, particularly those working in the agriculture industry.
“The agricultural community is a big part of our rural community here, and there are a lot of suicides, unfortunately, in that population. At this point, we are looking at identifying farmers, maybe agricultural workers who can help us to reach out to those individuals and to provide them with trainings and the ability to have conversations with others,” said Winkelman.
