The Fire Arts Center Gallery in Arcata is exhibiting the works of members Vanessa Veck and Jessica Friedlander through August in a show titled “Caverns and Cows.” A reception will take place Aug. 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. during Arts! Arcata.
Friedlander describes herself as an “autistic creative.” Her themes spring from her early love of classical mythology, social justice and her delight with the comically absurd. Her current work explores mother goddesses. Many of her figures are representative of cows and other animal figures.
Veck’s works are a study on the nature of changing states: capturing delicacy, movement and disintegration. Her exploration of textures and caverns serves an invitation to return to the senses.
“I take great joy in observing the natural world, experimenting with different creative mediums and quieting the mind,” Veck said.
The Fire Arts Center, located at 520 South G Street, has been offering instruction in ceramics and fused glass skills and providing studio space and kiln firing resources to the community since 2000.
