Africatown Heritage House to host Culture Fest

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — An event to showcase Black culture is coming soon to the Africatown Heritage House.

According to a press release, Culture Fest 2024 is scheduled for Saturday, July 27, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the African Heritage House (located at 2465 Winbush St).


LOCATION:

The free event, which organizers say “provides a taste of black culture for all to enjoy” features African drumming, choir performances, African folktales, plays, a historical apothecary class, vendors, food trucks, face painting, African crafts, interactive games, a community art project, free snowcones, and free school supplies.

Here is the full entertainment schedule for the event:

  • 4 p.m.: Opening, Libation Ceremony – Kim Pettway
  • 4:15 p.m.: History of Ifa – Wole Balewa
  • 4:30 p.m.: Balewa Drummers Jam Session
  • 4:45 p.m.: – MC Dance Act – Bruster’s Dance Academy
  • 5 p.m.: Poetry – Words and Melody
  • 5:15 p.m.: Gospel Funk Music – Da Hood Preacher
  • 5:45 p.m.: Balewa Drummers Jam Session
  • 6:15 p.m.: African Proverbs and Folktales – Makinde Gbolahan
  • 6:30 p.m.: Musical Selection – Gentle Spirits Praise Team
  • 7 p.m.: Outta Tha Horses Mouth – Play by Terrence Spivey
  • 7:30 p.m.: Musical Selection – Union Baptist Church
  • Closing prayer

“We are so excited to host Culture Fest for the first time,” said Jessica Fairley, Manager at
Africatown Heritage House.

“This is an opportunity for the greater Mobile area to visit the Clotilda exhibit all while getting a glimpse of the rich heritage of Black culture.”
