June brings a new exhibit to the RAL Art Center, 19 Main Street, Kilmarnock. The 52 original artworks in this show, “Simplicity,” include paintings, photography, fiber art, glass and sculpture entered by member artists.
Elizabeth “Liz” Harper of Essex County judged the show, reported exhibits team leader Juli Schuszler. Harper is a Guild Artist Member at Tappahannock Art Gallery (TAG). She served seven years as president of TAG and is now chairman of artists membership. She announced the winners at a reception on Friday, June 7, at the RAL Art Center.
For first place, Harper selected “Citrus in a Bowl,” a pastel by Mel Neale. It was “such a simple subject” and “beautifully painted in pastel with contrast and pops of light. The composition is enhanced by the lines drawing your eye to the subject, and the choice and application of colors make it a beautiful and classic piece. It’s one of those pieces that you see and you know it is just right,” said Harper.
