Taylor is currently wrapping up his three-year run on Nightwing, as it has been confirmed that Nightwing’s best comic run yet will end with Nightwing #118 in September 2024. Still, that doesn’t mean that the Eisner-award winning writer is done with the Bat-Family just yet.

DC has confirmed that Detective Comics #1090 will hit shelves with a new creative team onboard: Taylor and Janín. Their first arc together, “Mercy of the Father,” will center Batman’s parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, and their murder. The main cover art by Janín can be viewed below, along with all the details available for the first issue of this brand-new story.

This story will result in major changes for the Dark Knight, and things may never be the same again.

Knowing that ghosts — literal and/or figurative — from the past could be entering the fray for this storyline opens up endless possibilities as to what Taylor and Janín have in store for the Caped Crusader. One thing is certain: seeing as this new story launch is part of the line-wide DC All In initiative, the arc will be the perfect starting point for new Detective Comics readers.

Batman from Detective Comics 27 Cover

In contrast to Batman’s main title, Detective Comics has lately introduced more supernatural elements into the Caped Crusader’s narrative. More recently, in the ‘Tec run by writer Ram V, Batman has just overcome being possessed by the Azmer demon, and the story also featured the return of Doctor Hurt. In addition, the Orgham family — who wield power and control over all things supernatural in Gotham City — attempted to run Batman out of Gotham. But with help from his Bat-Family, Batman averted that consequence. Now, as the DC solicitation showcases, Batman’s next obstacle will be ghosts.

Tom Taylor wastes no time in planting his footprints in Batman lore.

Whether this is a literal ghost that’s about to haunt Bruce or a figurative one remains to be seen. But the issue summary confirms one thing: this ghost dates back to the night that Bruce Wayne’s life changed forever. It may even be a ghost that has been haunting Batman since that night, lurking in the background, watching from where he least expects it. The synopsis suggests that the revelation could change Batman forever, which could be a running theme of the arc.

A Lore-Changing Detective Comics Arc for Taylor and Janín

This Run Is Already Off to a Fascinating Start

Taylor wastes no time in planting his footprints in Batman lore. In many ways, he has already done that through his contributions to Nightwing’s lore, but his first arc in Detective Comics is already promising to be a life-changing one for Batman, tracing back to that fateful night in Crime Alley. There’s “starting with a bang,” and then there’s “leaving an impact,” and Taylor could certainly do the latter if he lands the execution. The deaths of Batman’s parents have always haunted him, but that fact could take on a literal meaning once October rolls around and Tom Taylor‘sDetective Comics run begins.

Detective Comics #1093 is available October 23rd from DC Comics.
