The feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar takes a strange turn as Siri is found playing Kendrick’s ‘Not Like Us’ when asked to play Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy.’
If you thought the feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake had reached its apex back in May with the viral popularity of the former’s diss track, “Not Like Us,” you’re not alone. But the enduring hype of that track has been evidenced in a new and interesting way since HipHopDX’s Jeremy Hecht revealed a previously unheard of discovery: fans are finding that when asking Siri to play Drake’s “Certified Lover Boy,” it responds by playing Kendrick’s “Not Like Us.”
Hecht revealed the news on Wednesday (July 10), which prompted fans to try it out for themselves, confirming it to be a widespread phenomenon. Eventually, they reached the conclusion that Siri utilizes lyrics in addition to album and song titles to play a requested song via vocal commands in case the user does not know the actual song’s title.
Because “Not Like Us” is a more recent release than Drake’s 2021 LP, and the song has reached impressive new heights on streaming platforms, the Kendrick Lamar track is being prioritized in Apple’s algorithms. “Not Like Us” also makes use of Drake’s album title in its lyrics, further increasing the likelihood of its suggestion when a fan says the title aloud.
But regardless of the logic behind it, the phenomenon doesn’t exactly bode well for Drake. The Toronto superstar was trolled as recently as last week when the Argentinian national soccer team used lyrics from “Not Like Us” to make fun of him.
Drake made a $300,000 bet that his home country would defeat the 2022 World Cup champions in the Copa America semifinals, only for Argentina to shut them out 2-0. The Argentina soccer team posted a photo on social media of the team hugging it out, with the caption “Not like us, not with us,” and the phrase “Not Like Us” written on the photo itself.
Meanwhile, K. Dot recently released the much awaited “Not Like Us” music video, furthering his victory lap around the Toronto native. Even stars like tennis legend Serena Williams are clowning on Drake, referencing Lamar’s song during her monologue hosting the 2024 ESPYs.
“If I’ve learned anything this year, it’s that none of us — not a single one of us, not even me — should ever pick a fight with Kendrick Lamar,” she said, as the hook from “Not Like Us” played in the background. “He will make your hometown not like you. The next time Drake sits courtside at a Raptors game, they’re gonna Forrest Gump him.” Serena Williams first declared her love for the song last weekend, calling it the “hit of the summer.”
