Dorchester County deputies have arrested a woman for allegedly embezzling nearly $20,000 from the Girl Scouts.
Melissa Arrwood, 49, of Summerville, was charged with breach of trust with fraudulent intent, according to the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office.
Arrwood, the leader of Troop 159, initially contacted deputies on April 25, reporting that $5,000 was missing from a deposit she had made in February. According to an incident report, she also reported that approximately $31,000 was missing from another deposit made earlier in April.
Investigators found that between Jan. 13 and April 25, Arrwood had acquired $119,194 in Girl Scout merchandise for her troop to sell during the season. However, the report states that she only submitted $74,199.28 of the expected $93,994.05 owed to the Girl Scouts. This discrepancy led to the accusation that she had embezzled $19,794.77.
Arrwood was arrested and booked at the Dorchester County Detention Center. She has since been released on bond.
