GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) —At Haus Murphy’s, you can find authentic German cuisine on the corner of Glendale and 58th avenues in downtown Glendale. The traditional Bavarian recipes are handed down through generations.
“The recipes are 100 years old at least, and yes, they’ve been passed down from generation to generation. They’re under lock and key. We don’t know any, how anything’s made. It’s completely ‘hush hush’ here,” says Maegan Bunjovac, a longtime server at Haus Murphy’s.
The menu contains German classics like a giant pretzel with beer cheese spread, bratwurst, sauerbraten, rouladen, and apple strudel. The schnitzel is as it should be: crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
If you’re looking for something with a twist, try the Sauerkraut Torte. It’s a classic chocolate cake made with sauerkraut (but you can’t taste it).
The only food not made in-house is the traditional German sausages that a local butcher provides. Everything else is handmade.
The restaurant turns 28 years old this August. Throughout those 28 years, it’s gained popularity with international travelers.
Bunjovac says military members especially like it: “We get a lot of military gentlemen that come in, and they’re like, ‘I just did a tour back in Germany, and you know, this is the closest thing that I tasted exactly like what I used to eat over there.”
It’s not a true German restaurant without a wide selection of beer. Haus Murphy’s has a selection of imports and one specific beer you will only find at the Glendale shop.
Bunjovac says, “All of our beers here are imported from Germany. One of my favorites is our Brewers Gold. It’s like an amber-colored beer. It’s amazing. You can only get it here. You can’t get it anywhere else. The owner tasted it, fell in love with it, and bought the entire stock.”
If you want to put away a few steins of Brewers Gold or any of the imports, Haus Murphy’s Oktoberfest is a celebration you won’t want to miss.
The festival runs on Fridays and Saturdays during the last three weekends in October. The restaurant’s inside and outdoor patio are packed with patrons celebrating, stein-holding contests, and a live “Oompah” band from Germany.
The restaurant is also known for its live accordion player that comes occasionally on Friday nights.
