Groundwater Levels: Gurgaon to Install 134 Gadgets for Groundwater Monitoring | Gurgaon News

Gurgaon: A total of 134 automatic piezometers will be installed across the city for continuous monitoring of groundwater levels. The initiative aims to understand and manage the city’s groundwater resources. According to a GMDA official, an MoU will be signed this week to facilitate the installation of these piezometers. The equipment will be placed at a distance of 5km from various govt buildings in the city, ensuring a comprehensive coverage of the groundwater monitoring network. The piezometers will be linked with GMDA’s Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), allowing real-time data to be available on a dashboard.“The data collected from these piezometers will be significant in implementing effective water conservation measures. By analyzing the groundwater levels and identifying areas of concern, the civic authorities can develop targeted strategies to preserve and replenish the city’s groundwater resources or can check the effectiveness of the measures,” Subhash Yadav, additional CEO of GMDA, urban environment, said. He added that the quality of water will also be examined at different locations in the future. The data collected from the piezometers will also help in understanding the impact of various factors on groundwater levels, such as rainfall patterns, land use changes, and extraction rates. Similarly, 95 automatic piezometers will be installed in Faridabad. Under the centre’s Atal Bhujal Yojana, the groundwater cell is already installing piezometers in rural areas of the city, but the urban areas are not covered, the official said.Experts have established that the city is extracting three times more water than it is recharging. As some areas still don’t have regularised water connections, people living there are dependent on groundwater, according to the water cell.
