Montana Folk Festival weekend brings music, good times to Butte | Butte News

The Montana Folk Festival is back in Butte, bringing good food, good music, and good times to the Mining City for the weekend of July 12 through July 14.

BUTTE, Mont. — When it comes to Butte’s summer spectacles, you just can’t beat the Montana Folk Festival, a tradition now 14 years strong in the Mining City.

Thousands of people from all over Montana, the United States, and even the world are gathered in Uptown Butte this weekend for the famous Montana Folk Festival.

It’s Butte’s own version of Woodstock: three days of fabulous food, arts and crafts, and, of course, all the music you could ever want to hear, with over 50 different performances across 21 different genres of music the world over.

One of those performers this year is Jerry Douglas, a 16-time Grammy Award winner and revolutionary of the Dobro guitar, known for his work on the ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’ soundtrack, and iconic for his foot-stomping bluegrass style.

“I had a great time,” Douglas said after performing his set on Friday night. “The audience is so cross-pollinated… there’s so many different people out there, so many different faces.”

“Yeah, Butte is treating me just fine,” Douglas continued with a smile.

With this many people, Folk Fest is always a massive undertaking to put on, as organizers work around the clock to keep everything fun, and keep festival attendance free of charge.

As such, participants are encouraged to either donate in order to keep future festivals free as well, or spend a few hours as a volunteer–you get to enjoy the same good vibes either way.

The Folk Festival runs until Sunday evening, so there’s still plenty of time to get in on the fun. And, of course, volunteers to help with tear-down are always appreciated. More info on the Folk Festival weekend schedule and volunteer opportunities are available at the Montana Folk Festival website.
