With another string of triple-digit heat back in the forecast, Sacramento restaurants and bars that mainly have outdoor seating are learning to adapt to the heatwave. Ernesto Delgado, owner of La Cosecha in Downtown Sacramento has a large outdoor patio with limited indoor seating, which is causing business to suffer because of the heat. “People don’t want to be outdoors too early, right about this hour, eight o’clock, it’s starting to cool off, but it’s almost too late to come out,” said Delgado. Delgado said he’s had to cut staffing because of the lack of business. “In the restaurant business, that’s what we do. We figure it out, keep the team light, and try to be here for our guests,” said Delgado.Across the river in West Sacramento, Drakes The Barn also cut hours to adjust to the heat of the day. They’re another mostly outdoor venue that’s been plagued by the rising temperatures this summer. “Obviously we’ve had to cut our hours a little bit because of the heat. We decided to close on Tuesday, and open an hour later for some of the days,” said Latoya Allen the communications specialist for Drake’s The Barn. The restaurant has added multiple water stations across the venue, misters, and umbrellas. “Hydrating is the most important because you want to keep your insides cool along with making sure your outside is cool. So we encourage drinking water all the time,” said Allen. In addition, Drake’s is hosting more nighttime events to get more business in the door. They’re doing night markets, movies on the lawn, and DJ concerts after sunset. Staff members like Sarah Kelly told KCRA 3 she’s hoping that people will brave the heat and come to Drake’s.”Not to say that I’m ever used to the heat because heat is disgusting, but I know how to come in prepared, so that’s all I can do. Hopefully, more people might want to brave it as well. I would love the business,” said Kelly. See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app.
